Engaged anthropology: Diversity and dilemmas

Abstract

The translated paper by Seta Low and Sally Merry is both a foreword and a detailed commentary on the proceedings of the Wenner-Gren workshop “The anthropologist as social critic: Working toward a more engaged anthropology” (January 22-25, 2008). The article was published in Current Anthropology, 51(suppl. 2), S203-226. To introduce the collection of articles in the follow-up to the workshop the authors discuss forms of engaged anthropology, its history, and its ongoing dilemmas.
