Abstract

The article examines the role of a real estate developer in the institutionalization of a grassroots memorial demand. Drawing on the Tyumen case of the Yuri Shatunov memorial site created beneath the Profsoyuzny Bridge by the developer Brusnika with the participation of a local fan community, the paper analyses how a commercial actor becomes a mediator between fans’ desire to publicly commemorate a significant figure and urban regimes of legitimacy: symbolic politics, infrastructural constraints, administrative procedures, and intellectual property law. The central question is how a fan-driven memorial demand is translated into a stable urban object and what role the developer plays in that translation. Methodologically, the article relies on the author’s position as a participant in the project and combines analytic autoethnography with the analysis of internal company materials, field observations, public communications, and statements by members of the fan community. The article argues that the developer in this case acts not merely as a sponsor or organizer of urban improvement, but as an actor who selects, transforms, and legitimizes the form of memory, making it compatible with urban infrastructure, legal norms, and public expectations. The fans’ demand does not disappear in this process; rather, it passes through a series of transformations, from the direct wish to name a site after the singer to a more complex and institutionally acceptable memorial form.
